cosinuss° Health App

The ultra-light and small patient monitor

cosinuss° Health App* is the data handling part of the cosinuss° patient monitoring solution which enables medical personnel to display and access relevant vital signs data of patients on their smartphones or tablets. Making thus patient monitoring the size to fit in a pocket.

At a glance: Features of the cosinuss° Health App

  • Look and feel of a usual patient monitor
  • Immediate and continuous mapping of vital signs data
  • Automatic documentation
  • Easy data export

A patient monitor on mobile devices

The cosinuss° Health App is a stand-alone software solution that can receive data from the c-med° alpha via the Bluetooth broadcasting protocol and display it on the smartphone or a tablet. The app can be installed on iOS and Android smartphones or tablets to visualize, document and export the values recorded and transmitted by the c-med° alpha.

Display Features:

  • Pulse curve: ECG-like PPG signal
  • Numerical display of current measured values
  • Curves displaying the trends in historical values
  • Connection status
  • Battery level
  • Messages about system status and measured values

Uncomplicated connection setup with the c-med° alpha

As soon as a c-med° alpha is switched on within range, a dialog appears in the app. Here, the c-med° alphas in the vicinity can be identified and the app can be set to connect to one of the sensors.

This is done by identifying and selecting the c-med° alpha based on its serial number and the signal strength, the so-called RSSI value (the closer the higher – at a value of -50 dBm, the sensor is closer to the receiving device than at a value of -89 dBm).

Display and visualization options

There are three types of visualizations of the measured data inside the app:

  • Display of the pulse curve in a photoplethysmogram.
  • Display of the current vital signs as well as perfusion and quality index as a numerical value.
  • Display of the trends of all vital parameters in curves.

The photoplethysmogram is a signal curve drawn in real time over 10 seconds, which is then always overwritten by the next 10 second curve. It represents changes in blood volume that occur in relation to the heartbeat.

This signal can be viewed as a series of waves. Each wave corresponds to one heartbeat. The "rising phase" of the wave indicates how the blood vessels dilate as the blood is pumped, while the "falling phase" reflects the contraction of the blood vessels.

This curve can help monitor and analyze heart rate, heart rhythm, and possible irregularities.

The current measured values of the vital parameters are visually displayed in each case in numerical values and the associated units. The individual parameters are differentiated by color.

To the right of the current values, the associated index (perfusion and quality) is displayed, which provides information on the measurement quality of the vital parameter.

To the left of the current value, the progression curve is building up: A bar of this curve corresponds to the averaged value over the data measured during one minute.

The respective threshold values of the vital parameters that trigger a notification are shown numerically and as a line in the graph. If the current value of a vital parameter reaches its upper or lower threshold, the app gives a corresponding notification to the user, e.g. SpO2 low.
The highest priority is given to the SpO2 value, followed by the pulse rate and finally the core body temperature.

Visual and acoustic notifications

The cosinuss° Health App has several groups of notifications which are prioritized in the following order:

  1. Connection to the c-med° alpha is lost
  2. Error in the c-med° alpha
  3. Low quality of the current measurement
  4. Vital parameters cross upper or lower threshold
  5. Battery low

When a notification condition is met, the affected area is visually highlighted on the screen.

At the same time, a message appears at the top of the screen with a descriptive text, an icon, and the color that matches the particular group of the message. These messages remain visible until the condition changes.

In addition to the visual feedback, there is an acoustic notification as an ongoing beeping.

User interactions

Start the recording

The desired sensor to connect to can be selected from the list in the "Select Sensor" dialog. The right c-med° alpha is identified by its serial number and signal strength. The "Start" button starts the recording of the vital signs.

Turn off/on or pause visual notifications

There is also a bell icon available in the app header that allows pausing the visual notifications for 2 minutes or turning them off entirely for all parameters. By default, all visual notifications are always active.

End the recording

The recording is ended by tapping the X in the current runtime display. After confirmation, the recording is ended and automatically saved in a folder in the file structure of the device.

Select day or night mode

In order to be able to use the app in different lighting conditions, you can choose between a day and a night mode. This allows you to:

  • Avoid reflections on the screen.
  • Improve the contrast of the display.
  • Achieve the desired brightness.

Turn off/on or pause acoustic notifications

In addition to the acoustic notifications, the photoplethysmograph also continuously provides acoustic feedback: a tone is generated at each peak of the pulse wave. The intervals of the tones can be used to derive the speed, frequency and rhythm of the pulse. The pitch of the tone, in turn, provides information about arterial blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). A lower pitch indicates a lower oxygen saturation.
The speaker icon in the header of the app allows you to pause or turn off all acoustic feedback for 2 minutes. Pausing or turning off the audio, however, does not turn off the visual notifications.
